S. Korea's GDP surges 31,000-fold since 1953

South Korea's gross domestic product has surged 31,000-fold since 1953, fueled by exports and competitiveness in heavy industries and consumer electronics. The country's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) shot up from a mere 47.7 billion won (US$40.9 million) in 1953, soaring to 1,485 trillion won last year. In 2014, there were only 15 countries in the world with an annual GDP exceeding $1 trillion. The gross national income (GNI) per capita skyrocketed to $28,180 last year from $67 in 1953, with the per capita GDP numbers adjusted for purchasing power parity hitting $34,356(Aug. 10, 2015, Yonhap).

Economic recovery weak despite overcoming MERS fallout

South Korea is gradually overcoming the fallout from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak, but the pace of recovery remains weak. Investment indicators are improving gradually and private consumption is showing signs of moderate recovery from a sharp downturn in the wake of the MERS outbreak. A survey of domestic forecasters revealed most believed South Korea's economy will grow in the mid-2 percent level in 2015, much lower than the 3.1 percent being forecast by the government(Aug. 6, 2015, Yonhap).

Finance minister urges public firms to adopt wage peak system

South Korea's public corporations should adopt a wage peak system by the end of August in order to help more young people find jobs. The guidelines for wage peak measures unveiled by the government call for lowering the wages of people nearing retirement age and using the money saved to hire young workers(Aug. 5, 2015, Yonhap).

Corporate earnings miss estimates as shipbuilders drag

The second-quarter earnings of listed firms fell below analysts' expectations as the nation's big three shipyards dragged down the overall figure with heavy losses from money-losing offshore facilities. The operating earnings guidance for 100 companies traded on the main KOSPI and secondary KOSDAQ markets was estimated at 24.2 trillion won (US$20.7 billion) in the April-June period at the end of the quarter. But their actual operating profit was tallied at 19.8 trillion won in the second quarter, 18 percent lower than what market players had expected, according to the data compiled by market researcher FnGuide(Aug. 7, 2105, Yonhap).

S. Korean exporters fear ripple effect from China shock

Fears of a slowdown in the Chinese economy sent shock-waves across global financial markets, leaving South Korean exporters jittery over their future performance as they rely heavily on the world's second-largest economy. South Korea is one of the leading suppliers of intermediate goods to Chinese companies who buy parts, components and materials from abroad and assemble them for exports, but its outbound shipments sharply fell in the first half mainly due to a drop in demand from China(Aug. 24, 2015, Yonhap).

S. Korea's entrepreneurship index up in 2015

South Korea's overall business mentality has improved this year, but it still lags behind most members of the OECD. The Global Entrepreneurship Index(GEI) for South Korea stood at 54.1, ranking 28th among 130 countries this year, up four slots from 2014, according to the report by the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute(GEDI). The GEI, released every year, is designed to measure a country's overall attitude and conditions for business practices, including the people's level of creativity, as well as evaluating the country's businesses, regulations and legal systems.  Among the OECD members, however, South Korea came in 22nd place out of the 34 nations, inching up from the 23rd spot it had claimed the year before. The United States claimed the top spot with an index reading of 85, followed by Canada's 81.5 and Australia's 77.6, according to the GEDI report(Aug. 18, Yonhap).
